The Australian grape and wine community definitely punch above its weight with wine exports, in 2015 Australia was in the top 5 wine exporting countries in the world!
Our wine export figures are even more impressive when you consider that we are only 11th in the world when you look at the amount of area planted to vineyards. Spain is easily the biggest when it comes to vineyard area, having 13.7% of the world’s total vineyard area! Australia is ranked behind countries like Turkey, Chlie and Romania. We’ve got about 2% of the world’s vineyards here in Australia, making some of the most exciting wines in the world
We expect to remain in the top 5 for 2015, with value and volume growth for Australian wine recorded for the first three months of the year. All global regions recorded value growth for Australian wine exports in the past year except for the Middle East. North East Asia was the best performing region and exports grew by 47 per cent. South East Asia was also a strong performer – exports grew 22 per cent. Exports also grew to the other two major regions – North America (up 5 per cent) and Europe (up 2 per cent).
